OUR PROGRAMS

Our Program to Prevent Drug Misuse and Disease Transmission is a multidimensional initiative designed to address the complex interplay between addiction, public health, and community resilience. Through targeted prevention efforts—including education campaigns and grassroots outreach—we equip individuals with critical knowledge about the risks of substance misuse and the transmission of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, particularly through unsafe injection practices. Our referral system ensures that those struggling with addiction receive timely assessments and are connected to appropriate rehabilitation services, complemented by counseling and therapeutic support that addresses underlying psychosocial factors. To mitigate immediate health risks, our needle exchange program provides sterile injection equipment and promotes safe disposal practices, reducing environmental hazards and curbing disease spread. Recovery does not end with treatment; our aftercare framework offers sustained support, relapse prevention strategies, and community reintegration pathways that empower individuals to maintain sobriety and rebuild their lives with dignity. At its core, this program seeks to reduce disease transmission, restore agency, and foster a culture of healing—where every individual is given the tools, trust, and support to transform adversity into lasting change.

What our clients say

Through our collaborative efforts, Mkono Kwa Mkono has catalyzed a profound impact—illuminating the path from addiction to empowered sobriety for fifteen individuals. We have been humbled by their journeys, each marked by resilience, renewal, and the quiet revolution of reclaiming one’s life. These stories are not merely personal triumphs; they are reflections of a deeper truth: that the human spirit, when met with compassion, structure, and community, is capable of extraordinary transformation. Mkono Kwa Mkono has stood not only as a witness, but as an architect—providing the scaffolding of support, the language of dignity, and the tools of self-empowerment. This anthology pays tribute to their unwavering courage—not simply in confronting the shadows of their past, but in designing futures rich with meaning, leadership, and contribution. Each narrative is a luminous testament to what becomes possible when healing is collective, when support is intentional, and when individuals are trusted to lead their own transformation. Together, these voices form a living legacy—proof that recovery is not just possible, but profoundly powerful.

For eighteen years, I lived in hopelessness, trapped in drug dependency and surviving on the streets of Kiwandani, Kilifi. I was forgotten, lost all connection to home, and consumed by despair and each day blurred into the next, with nothing but the weight of isolation above me. By a stroke of grace, Mkono Kwa Mkono Organization found me. They facilitated my rehabilitation, where I began the journey of healing and rediscovery. After completing the program, they continued to walk beside me. They also provided entreprenuership skills that enabled me to start a small business. Today, I am no longer defined by my past—I am empowered by my present and inspired by the future.

This support enabled me to initiate a modest entrepreneurial venture. Over time, my business has flourished, allowing me not only to sustain myself but also to provide for my family with dignity and stability. I remain profoundly grateful for their transformative intervention, which has restored my autonomy and reaffirmed my sense of purpose.

Our partners

Mkono Kwa Mkono stands at the vanguard of community-driven transformation, committed to cultivating a drug-free society through strategic partnerships and evidence-informed interventions. Recognizing that the complexity of substance misuse demands a multisectoral response, we have begun to architect a robust coalition of collaborators who share our vision of resilience, dignity, and public health equity. Our current constellation of partners—including the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), the Kilifi County Government, and Tumaini Njema—has enabled us to synchronize grassroots mobilization with policy-level engagement. These alliances have fortified our capacity to deliver contextually grounded solutions, amplify community voices, and embed prevention within local governance frameworks. We extend an open invitation to local NGOs focused on youth empowerment, mental health, and social reintegration; to government agencies operating in education, healthcare, and social protection; and to private sector entities committed to corporate social responsibility and inclusive development. Together, we can co-create a multidimensional response that transcends silos and fosters systemic change. The benefits of partnership are manifold: expanded reach, pooled expertise, shared infrastructure, and enhanced legitimacy. More than transactional, these alliances are transformational—enabling us to reimagine recovery not as an isolated journey, but as a collective endeavor rooted in solidarity and sustained impact. Mkono Kwa Mkono envisions a future where every individual is safeguarded from the harms of addiction, empowered to reclaim their agency, and supported by a community that believes in their potential. Through strategic alliance-building, we are not merely addressing a crisis—we are constructing a legacy of hope.
